Is it possible to install only a small portion of Oracle on client laptops? Or does one need to install the whole Oracle software in order to use Oracle databases?

I want to create a Java application which runs on many 400 MHz laptops. Do I need to install Oracle completely on all these laptops to use Oracle database? Or can I install a "light" version, which doesn't use much harddisk space, RAM and prozessor time? If yes, how much harddisk space, RAM and prozessor time does it cost me?
