Problem solved. Though no confirmation yet as to what the problem was.

I tried the patch set on another HP-BOX. Only to find that someone rm'ed the OUI directory (that someone being root I suspect). So I was forced to use the original 8.1.7.0 CD to run OUI. It worked.

So I tried the same on the original HP box. Running OUI from the 8.1.7.0 CD and not from $ORACLE_HOME/bin (which btw contains that 8.1.7.0 installation I did from that exact same CD).

This time around OUI read the patch set's staging area.

Ours is not to reason why... :-)
