I was not able to load Oracle 8.1.7.x on a RH8.0 (RedHat 8.0) intel (Dell P4 2.1Ghz ) machine: kernel 2.4.18-14. The only way I was able to get 8.1.7.0 installed was to add
compat-glibc-6.2-2.1.3.2
compat-egcs-6.2-1.1.2.16
from the RH7.2 cd.

I also added /etc/sysctl.conf:

kernel.shmmax = 4294967295
kernel.shmmin = 1
kernel.sem = 250 125000 200 128

After I ran the install, I ran the upgade to 8.1.7.4 then I launched dbassist. When I try to create a simple database, I get:

more ./admin/testuuu/create/crdb1.log
Connected.
