Listener out of resources

I am running Server release 8.1.7.4.0 on HP-UX and have hit a problem with the Oracle listener that seems related to some sort of resource limit.

When the number of already connected users gets up to about 140, the listener returns the following error to sqlplus on the remote (Linux) client:

ORA-03113: end of file on communication channel

Restarting the listener allows a few more connections to be established but it soon reverts to returning the above errror. Can anyone indicate resource limit adjustments, Kernel (maxfiles_lim?) or Oracle, with which to investigate this problem ?

Thanks in advance,
