Hello All ,

             I'm trying to install oracle 8.1.6 on rhl 7.1 , i installed java sdk 1.4 from a magazine cd . After installing java sdk i created a symbolic link for the jre
following were the series of commands I executed ....

$ ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.0/jre /usr/local/java
$ cd /mnt/cdrom/INSTALL/LINUX
$ ./RUNINSTA (enter)

i got the following message after executing above command

The java runtime environment was not found at ../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.1.8/datafiles/expanded/linux/bin/jre Hence , the oracle universal installer cannot be run . install JRE version 1.1.8 or higher and try again .

i want to know whether the 'jre' i installed (part of java sdk 1.4) is a new or old version(below 1.1.8)?

if its a new version(> 1.1.8) then why does the oracle does not identify jre even after giving a symbolic link ? Is my symbolic link command correct ??

do i need to download the right 'jre' for the installer to start or did i commit any mistake in the above series of commands ?

 Please help me out .

Thanks in advance ..
