I once had a similar problem which was caused by a job that was scheduled to clean out old records. Unfortunately, due to a situation, there was one particular portion of the job which would fail after having done a lot of work (and creating a lot of redo). Because the job failed (without generating an error message by the way) the actual work still needed to be done and the next time the job ran, it would again generate all that redo.

When it happened, I was just as much at a loss to explain it as you are now. Nothing had changed and it had always worked before... However, the situation had changed. The data was what was causing it and not an update to the software, etc.
