Shooting in the dark. Is the environment correct for the dbshut to do its thing? The easiest way I found to do similar shuts and starts is to custom write my own scripts and then use a 'su - username -c command' via the rc.d scripts. This way the start/shut script gets run in the correct userid and the .profile for that user is also executed.
