You did not mention your version so I'll assume 8i as in 9i standby's are covered under data guard.

Why are you doing this? Read Oracle8i Standby Database Concepts and Administration Release 2 (8.1.6) from http://tahiti.oracle.com you'll see
how to better transmit and apply the logs
