accounting table partitioning performance

Can anyone explain what would i gain from paritioning BY RANGE
accounting table for modem access in ISP. I plan to partition them
for start just based on year, and I'm currently interested only in
speed and performance on data in this year. 
99 % of operations on table are just inserts, and 1 % is 
getting statistical data for this year.
