Re: Oracle Right or Wrong

I've been lurking for a few months too, and I tend to notice a certain amount of ego/arrogance/agressive assertiveness, whatever you want to call it. I don't, however, see it in the light that you do.

To suggest that people in this newsgroup should always be on their best behaviour is denying the context that this newsgroup exists in: newbies that refuse to read the documentation, experts that refuse to read the documentation, and newbies & experts that refuse to actually back up their opinions with repeatable results. It's can be frustrating. There are thousands of self proclaimed "Oracle experts" out there that spew a lot of drivel. People sometimes come to this newsgroup to verify whether this drivel is true. Thus ensues an argument as long-held beliefs are busted. Esxplosions of long-held beliefs are bound to be messy.

Several of the people in this newsgroup are truly world-class Oracle experts and can disprove, repeatably with code, a lot of claims and myths out there about the Oracle DBMS. Some of these claims and myths stem from Oracle's own curricula, consultants, and documentation. And they've had to do it for *years*. That breeds just a wee bit o' cynicism, no?

The pattern of ego you're experiencing tends to happen on almost all special interest group discussion areas -- there's a certain level of expectation in the room because of the amount of silliness that has come in the past. How many times do people ask the SAME question without checking the archives? Or the documentation (even the basic CONCEPTS manual)?

This isn't a support area, it's a discussion area, and if people are peeved about something, there's probably a reason for it. I see it as an opportunity to learn.
