8.1.7 Information:
8.1.7 on Windows XP Client, is only certified on a limited set of components, you must refer to "Oracle8i Client Release Notes Release 3 (8.1.7.0.0) for Windows XP" Server Editions:

Windows XP has 2 editions/versions, Professional and Home. Oracle will ONLY certify on Professional.



The referenced document has a listing of the limitations and exact versions of 8.1.7.x supported..
