Theoretically speaking it is possible, though it is not guaranteed to work and in some cases definitely won't work. Also it violates the definition of downward compatibility: a lower version client can connect to a higher version server, the other way around is not guaranteed. In this specific case, there are too many releases between 8i and 7.3.4 (IIRC Oracle doesn't even guaranteer backwards compatibility from 8.1.7 to 8.0).
