You've answered the question yourself when you said 'time permitting.

The advantage of performing an upgrade via the upgrade script is that it's potentially much quicker than the export/import method. Note that the first backup I mentioned is not optional (unless you feel lucky) so that needs to be considered but it's still should be substantially quicker. You also don't have issues with a "second" database to deal with.

The advantages of using export/import is you use a utility that is both familiar and dear to our hearts and that at the end of the process, you have a nice new, defragmented, cleaned up database. If you're going to upgrade, it's a good opportunity to clean things up. The disadvantage is that the upgrade process will take longer.

I have absolutely no issue with you preferring the export/import method as it's obviously the most appropriate method at your site. However it time doesn't permit, then the upgrade script is potentially the way to go.
