I personally moved files from file sistem to logical volumes and vice-versa so i am sure it works.
BTW you have to take in account how much time is needed to export/import 8 gigabytes of data. Of course migrating from an OS to another would force you to use exprt/import but if the OS is the same why dont use phisical copies with upgrade scripts?
