For a totally excellent read on indexes and what they do, try :

Beginning Oracle Programming by Sean Dillon, Tom Kyte et al, Chapter 8.

I bought this book for my wife to learn Oracle stuff, and I'm currently reading it myself. It covers so much more than programming - I recon the title is a bit misleading.
