libclntsh and LDAP functions

I have Oracle 8.1.7 on Solaris and it seems that libclntsh.so has a number of global symbols which appear to be LDAP functions. I'd like to know if this is documented anywhere and whether applications are supposed to use them. And if so, whether the interfaces are thread-safe and what the attached strings are, if any.

My attempts to search for this data proved futile. For example a search for ldap_open returns only one document which says the library to link with is libldapclnt8.a and doesn't mention libclntsh at all.
