I installed 8.1.7 on SuSE 7.2 relatively painlessly. The most serious problem I faced was getting the Java apps to work. The trick is to unset all shell localisation variables that deal with messeges before you run the app

   unset LANG
   unset LC_ALL
   unset LC_MESSAGES
