I think that's a bogus answer... as long as you install to a separate Oracle home, it should be fine if you've got the system resources to spare. You probably should shut the 8i instance down during installation, as it might consume resources the install needs. But once installed, I doubt having the 8i instance running alongside 9iAS matters if, as I said, you've got enough system resources to accomodate both.
