upgrade 8.0.5 -> 8.1.7 SLES

hey ng,

we are upgrading our DB system under SLES (SUSE Linux) from 8.0.5 to 8.1.7 problem:
after ORACLE universal installer an before Migrating the DB the situation is as follows:

the db is shutdow. for the migration the db has to open in noarchive mode. svrmgrl> startup
--> no init.ora file, because of new path for the installation
--> startup pfile='/oracle/.........'

the db tries to start, but nothing happens. no message, nothing. if you kill the startup session and try again svrmgrl, you get the message: ORA-.... end-of-file on communication channel if i reboot the system the error message is away, but the problem is the same. no reaktion, while triing to open the db. Did somebody make the same experience????? any solution????
