FWIW, had a similar problem on HP-UX 11 running 8.1.6 last year. It looked to me like a dinkum Oracle bug after some intensive debugging. A similar SQL processing _more_ data than the problematic one (and ran more than a 1000x longer), worked.

As far as I can recall, I think we narrowed it down to a join method... Anyway, we had to make some major changes to the processing and db anyway, and upgraded to 8.1.7 and I have not seen the problem since. Touch wood.

Could be worth your while to check Metalink on this.
