Does this mean you are *not* new to, say, 8i on Unix/Linux?

Or are you brand new to Oracle generally?

The short answer to your question is that you

  1. connect as a privileged user
  2. type 'startup' (without the quotes)
  3. sit back and enjoy

The rather longer answer is that you must have installed Oracle correctly beforehand, and the service associated with the Instance must already have started.
