a good point and one which I never gave any thought to in the past. However, as I have done it on both HP and Dec Unix, I can only presume that it works !

A quick test later and I've proved that it does work !

If I export to disc, I get a '.dmp' extension, but if I imp from that file without the .dmp, I still get it imported.

On tape, I no doubt have something, but then I'm not importing from a named file on the tape, but from the tape itself - and it works. The only difference is that it asks me for the device size limits on both exp and imp.

this format will append the ".dmp" suffix, at least in Solaris. Will it try to
append that suffix also on HP and Dec?
