Some people (like your boss) are paranoid when they hear 'unsupported', because they think that by doing everything by the book they will be covered if anything goes wrong.

Imagine - database goes down, business loses half a day, people want to blame someone. The finger is pointed at your boss, he looks around and finds an _ parameter. Aha. Even if it has nothing to do with the failure, it diverts attention from the real reason and your boss is put on the spot for using 'unsupported' parameters. So, to avoid this, he says that they shouldn't be used. He's covered his arse instead of improving service, which is the norm at most places.
