Oracle 9i parallel problems

Running Oracle 9i on a Sun 420 with 4 processors and 4 gig ram.

I tried setting parallel_max_servers to 16, and also had parallel_automatic_tuning and parallel_broadcast_enabled set to true.

With these settings, the database would get into a bizarre state when a query was run on a parallel table.

Trying to get into SQL*PLUS would hang for a very long time after the Copyright message, and before the "connected" message. Similar hangs using Pro*C and ColdFusion at the connection phase. But the hang would not happen when logging in as SYS or SYSTEM...just normal user. Bringing parallel_max_servers back down to 6, and getting rid of those other two parallel parameters get rid of the symptom, but things seem to run slower, not surprisingly.

Anyone seen this before?
