Have you tried to install the client with SP2 and it all worked well?

Or is this your first attempt to install the client, regardless of service pack?

The reason I ask is: I suspect you are encountering the well-known Pentium 4 bug, and nothing to do with the service pack at all. Particularly since my SP3 machine works fine.

If you have a Pentium 4 client, then go to www.google.com and do a Groups search for this group, looking for the words 'Pentium 4 bug'. The workarounds are available there (you basically install from hard disk, having renamed/deleted one file beforehand).
