In my opinion the server platform is a black-box, that is the great thing of Oracle. So it should not matter if you install Oracle9i on HP/UX or Linux (assuming you are purely moving the database, not any application things). I do not see how you can move to Linux if you first have to do an expensive test setup with HP/UX.
But:
- Test or scan your application for the use of rowids! The
rowid-structure is changed in 8 and 9i (may be longer than 18 when
converted to char).
- You can import a Oracle7 dumpt straight into Oracle9i, but you can
not import a Oracle9i dump back into Oracle7. So there is no way back
after the cut-over.
