Thanks for the feedback ladies and gentlemen,
I translated the query into a decode statement, less readable but it works.
I found several amusing parser problems with object-relational stuff as well (varrays, nested tables of objects and alike), took a while to get around them, but it's somewhat exciting to find a way to overcome such annoying errors.
