Henry,
I had a lot of trouble installing 9iAS on Win2k. Bought the book Oracle Web Applications 101 by Sten Vesterli (Oracle Press via Osborne). It helped quite a bit ... but I still have a zillion post-it notes on nearly every page to make corrections. Sten's web site is supposed to contain the code samples, but I couldn't find them when I looked (a couple of months ago). I've installed it about 8 times now (from original "proof of concept" computer to "test" computer to "mid-tier" computer ... and finally - phew - in production).

The biggest problem is that the release notes and everything else (book included) refer to old or outdated stuff. For example, docs keep referring to WebDB (what Oracle Portal used to be partially, and you can't do what the docs say ... WebDB ain't the same). A lot of the readme files are incorrect. It appears that Oracle just took a bunch of Open Source stuff (like Apache) and tossed it all on a CD ... and it's up to the customer to sort it all out. It's definitely not ready for prime time. I'm just glad I didn't have to use all the tools ... mostly just wanted Oracle Reports and Portal.

You said you did a default install. Well, unfortunately, that's not going to work very well. You have to do a custom install ... with lots of optional steps and fiddling around to make it work. For example, you don't want to let it install Apache (if you want to have the default port 80). If you can find the book mentioned above, that will be a good starting point. But since part of 9iAS is 8.0.6 and part is 8.1.x and who knows what all else, you end up with multiple ORACLE_HOMEs ... each with their own tnsnames.ora files (I had to manually copy the Report Server line created in one of them to all the others before I could get Oracle Reports to connect).

Good luck,
Roger Crowley
