thanks to all of you for replying, adding comments etc. I have indeed found the part in the docs when it states that SUM() returns a NULL if there is nothing to sum. I had simply overlooked it before - the joys of small print and old(er) eyes !

I've just been bitten by the following, and I can't find it in the docs, so maybe it is an 'undocumented feature', but it is most certainly on my list of gotchas now !
