I don't get you reference but we use the equivalent. The administrators and operators of the application like BR0101 to refer to the audit of bramley council (client br01) in the year 2001. Me i think of them as meaningful,meaningless sequences but hey what do i know.

Oh and our staff numbers are stored in character fields! and aren't necessarily unique.
