Go to HP's site. There are many kernel patches you need to have in place for Oracle 8.1.7. make sure your system is patched up to date. When I went from 8.0.6 to 8.1.7.3 we had about 10 patches to apply - that was about 3 months ago. A quick check right now showed 3 pages of patches relating to oracle and HPUX 11.
