817 pegging 100% of the CPU on HPUX 11

I've got an intermittent problem on an 817 database with random processes hitting 100% of the CPU and stopping the whole thing dead. (the database).

I've managed to track some of the session and I've found the following :

	selecting from a sequence
	imp
	loggin on to the database
	selecting from tables
	updating a table
	deleting from a table
My own TOAD session - which was idle at the time !!

It's a bit puzzling and I can't find anyhting on Metalink, or Google.

I'm on HPUX 11 64 bit and Oracle 8.1.7.3 and it has been doing this to me on and off for a couple of weeks. I can usually 'fix' it by bouncing the instance, but when I do that the problem moves to another instance and we start all over again. For example DEV817 instance starts playing up, kill a few sessions and another one takes over all the CPU, kill the instance and the problem moves to QA817 instance.

Anybody got any ideas ?

I can't do anyhting on the database while the session is running haywire and when I've got control back, it has been killed (from the OS) and I can't look at much evidence.

Any help gratefully received as ever !

Regards,
Norman.
