I can only speak from experience.

University student => Failed Rock Musician => Porn Star => Political Activist For The Rights Of Vegetables => Sumo Wrestler Trainer => Dietician Adviser => Astronaut => Pirate => A Couple Of Years In A South Asian Detention Centre => Hoola Hoop Market Researcher => Porn Star (again) => Harpoon Assistant on a Humpback Whale Research Vessel => David Bowie Groupie => Religious Cult Leader => Porn Star (for the last time) => Developer => System Analyst => IT Trainer => DBA => DBA Instructor => Struggling DBA Consultant

On my resume, I gloss over the rather dull and boring period of my life between leaving uni and becoming a developer :)
