Hi

I wouldn't forget about SQL Server if I were you and you're crystal ball watching wondering which database software is going to be a market leader in the future.

I personally believe it's going to be a three way race with Oracle, IBM and MS all taking a considerable market share. MS for all their faults are a very shrewd and powerful organisation and SQL Server will improve in the future, that's guaranteed. And although it might not have all the functionality of Oracle, price alone is a pretty powerful motivator for many many organisations. It's often false economy but there's nothing like learning the hard way.

I think Oracle's bottom is somewhat safe but a spanking every now and then will always occur.

From a career point of view, Oracle is not doing you any favours. The auto administration, auto tuning, auto everything focus which Oracle is using to combat the MS story is twisting the perception of the need for an Oracle DBAs. I know a qualified DBA is crucial for your enterprise's data to be effectively administrated, you know, but many organisations are now not so sure. The waters are being mudded and the market is beginning to show.

I've invested too much time and energy to jump ship just yet. But I'm learning the guitar and taking singing lessons just in case :)

Regards

Richard
