What trace level have you set in the listener.ora file? 0, USER, ADMINISTRATOR, or SUPPORT?. SUPPORT will give the most information.
Post the trace file you end up with.
While you're at it, how about the listener.ora from $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin and the recent part (the part surrounding the time of the listener dying) of the log file from $ORACLE_HOME/network/log?
