The installer does not need to use the cdrom - it copies most of its stuff to /tmp and runs from there. Obviously if the shell you started the installer from is in that directory etc then it cannot be unmounted.

Run "fuser -c /cdrom/mountpoint" and you'll see what processes need to be looked at
