Oracle Parallel Server (OPS) option enables you to run multiple instances on one database on each node in a cluster. In Oracle 9i it is called Real Application Clusters, RAC.

When you have multipel CPU's in your machine you can benifit from parallel query etc.
These techniques have nothing to do with OPS/RAC.
