Have you ever performed a 'nologging' operation when operating a standby? Guess what? It 'breaks' the standby. Add a datafile, resize a file.... er, yup: same thing.

Ah, log files. You mean those things that store redo. The redo that isn't generated by nologging operations? I, er, can't quite see how non-existent redo can be propagated over the network. Please explain....

Standby is a wonderful solution, actually. For the right problem. And especially in 9i, with Data Guard. But don't over-egg the pudding: it's not 'unbreakable', has significant management requirements and overhead, and is probably not what our original poster would consider an appropriate solution in the first place.
