Programmer - maybe. DBA Maybe not...

One of the things I see missing from this thread is any mention of doing a logical database and application design. Any "moron" can write SQL. A lot of people can write a lot of code - some good some not so good. But if it is just thrown together hap-hazardly, then, you will not get any scalability, reliability or concurrency and the customer who needs high trans/sec rate will never be able to achieve it.

No amount of "tuning" will ever overcome 1) a bad logical design and 2) A bad application design.

Seeking advice is very good. Knowing who to seek the advice from is even better. Those that have answered thus far eat, sleep and breath databases. We know what is good and what is bad. Most "programmers" may know how to code SQL, but if they truly don't understand basic database concepts, you will only ever develop a mediocre product.

Again, No amount of "tuning" will ever overcome 1) a bad logical design and 2) A bad application design.

(BTW, I prefer Oracle/Rdb which runs on the most secure OS on the web - OpenVMS)
