Strictly speaking, this definition of an instance is incorrect. AN instance in Oracle terms is the SGA + the background processes - no more, no less. You've added the kernel as well, which as I said is not strictly part of the instance. Makes absolutely no difference to the discussion point, but just in case some people get confused ...
