Gaps in Sequence

Hi,

I have sequences on all our tables in a oracle 8.1.7. database, Solaris 2.7. However, these sequences are not always in sequence. Sometimes there is a gap of 20 numbers, but also there are lots of random gaps between 2-20 numbers. I have not stopped the database or performed any rollback and the entries on the tables are entered through an application so we can be sure of this. This happens on all my tables. All tables are accessed through the same user. The default cache is 20 numbers but why the gap where there is no stopping of the database or rollback??

Any help appreciated.
