As far as I can tell, with LMTs it only depends on total size of the segments in that tablespace. I'm quite convinced that space management becomes a noticeably problem when there's order of 100,000, but a few thousand don't really hurt. I don't know of any other problem with a moderate number of extents.

So, I'd size for an expected 1,000 extents in a tablespace, and not worry until it got over 10,000.
