About the only help I can offer is: from some considerable experience, if you can install on a clean machine, after a fresh install of the O/S, do so. You'll find installation problems largely vanish under these circumstances.

That's not to say that you can't have 9i installed after 8i, or in combination with it (I have 8.1.6, 8.1.7, 9.0.1 and 9.0.2 all on the one box). But arranging for all that to happen is tricky, and it's much easier if you just one or the other to wipe the entire machine and start again.

As it is, I suppose you've got ORACLE_HOME problems and issues, but there's not enough information in your post to tell for sure, or to give any more subtle advice.

So, the advice I *can* offer remains: Format the hard disk and start over.
