Thanks, I'll check the listener status.
I used the installation instructions from SuSE to install Oracle. I created the partitions as they recommended and set all partition sizes twice as large as required. I also downloaded and installed the patches they recommended.
I didn't get any error messages during install, so I am hoping it went as it should.
As for the error message; If I type in sqlplus and try to logon I get the message
"ORA 01034 ORACLE not available"
