Because large monolithic datafiles have to be backed up in their entirety; they have to be restored in their entirety; and they have to be recovered in their entirety.

Plus, they only live on one disk, which means you are foregoing Oracle's normal striping and I/O distribution mechanisms. Striping effects are good for performance. Large single files kind of counteract that.

There are other reasons, but those are the main ones.
