You might want to take a look at Thunderstone's Texis database at http://www.thunderstone.com/ It was specifically designed to handle full-text search in combination with more typical database content. I don't know how large your documents are, but indexing time for a million documents should be measured in minutes or hours, not days.

If your project is primarily text search you may want to use Texis by itself, or else many people run Texis alongside Oracle, letting each do what they are best at.
