- I find it a really bad idea to have a database server
and file server on the same machine - you will never get
full performance on either, as there are conflicting
requirements.
- M$ tends to give you 'bang for the buck'; every now and
then some obscure process wakes up and insists on doing
whatever, freezing the machine. The indexing server would
be such a service. Guess it's a way to make people feel the
OS is really doing something (and therefore, better).
Having said all that, some things pop to mind:
- network connections overloaded? Maximum # reached?
- Virus scanners running updates/scans?
- try MTS if not installed.
- set a short time-out period in sqlnet.ora
- optimize on background processes (option of NT).
Hth to set you off in the right direction.
