It is rumoured that Oracle 9i Release 2 will be able to rename columns.

Don't hestitate to have a look at www.keeptool.com . The administration tool "Hora" allows renaming of columns from 7.3.4 up to 9.0.1 databases. Simply right-click the appropriate column and the tool generates and/or executes a large script that reorganizes the table with renamed column.
