The 2 Homes are needed because the 8.0.x and 8.1.x binaries ( especially the libraries and DLLs) are incompatible ..

Once a 8.1 home is established you can uninstall( though not easy, search the google groups for the best technique to clean a previous version off) the 8.0.x one - adjust your PATH ( and since you did not specify an OS, maybe your shared library path ) and use the 8.1.x versions for your work... ( You can deinstall 8.0.x first if you want, but most folks wait until they test the new one)

( If you have saved forms, code , etc inside the 8.0.x home directory structure, move them to the new structure..)

I believe that 9.x.x will need a new Oracle Home as well, but, once installed, it can be your only one...
