I don't agree with that last sentence. Oracle works with hardware vendors to provide ports. It is a tug-o-war of sorts to have one-off's for given vendors but it is possible to do so. The tuning issue is not because of multi-platform issues.
Also, suggesting that people move to 9i, while a good idea, I can only imagine what new bugs Oracle has provided for 'us' to debug. <g>
